Mock Draft V2.0

Mock Draft 2.0

My updated mock draft, fair few changes higher up the board with some of the later picks staying as previous mock. That simply being down to those teams having less pressing needs and from a “need” perspective easier to focus in on, although that being said those teams may draft on BPA rather than need with players always falling on draft day.

1.1 Carolina Panthers : DE – Da’Quan Bowers – Clemson

I still think Bowers has to have a pretty good pro day, considering all his high grading will be based on one good season at the college level. But Carolina need help on the D-Line and with the greater depth at DT they could pickup a DT early in the 2nd or later.

1.2 Denver Broncos : DT – Marcell Dareus – Alabama

With a fantastic combine workout which will probably focus evaluators to believe what they see on tape a bit more and generally having less off the field and work ethic issues than Fairley the Broncos snap up Dareus although Bowers would probably have been their preferred choice.

1.3 Buffalo Bills : DT – Nick Fairley – Auburn

I really don’t think the Bills can continue thinking Williams and Johnson are the answer at DT considering they gave up just shy of 170 Yards a game on the ground which is just shocking. Fairley while not looking like the Athlete Dareus is still showed well in the combine and that will backup his monster season last year at Auburn.

1.4 Cincinnati Bengals : QB – Blaine Gabbert – Missouri

Certainly not what I hope happens, but as the weeks go by the latest rumbling from the Carson Palmer camp gives no hope to any Bengal fan that he is coming back, and I quote “I don’t have to play football for money. I’ll play it for the love of the game but that would have to be elsewhere. I’m prepared to live my life” So unless the Bengals pull of a trade when the CBA gets sorted that lands them a starting Caliber QB I can’t see how they now go any other way with this pick.

1.5 Arizona Cardinals : OLB – Von Miller – Texas A&M

While I think pickup up Peterson would be a better long term pick I think the Cardinals may opt to help out the pass game by bringing in a pass rushing LB. Miller has only helped his stock continue to be solidified by showing up well in the combine backing his college resume.

1.6 Cleveland Browns : DE – Robert Quinn – North Carolina

The Browns will be gutted that Fairley and Dareus are both gone at this point, but Quinn is still an elite prospect who can come in and play DE in a 4-3 Scheme which seems to be the likely move for the Browns.

1.7 San Francisco 49ers : QB – Patrick Peterson – LSU

The 49ers get tremendously lucky and pickup Patrick Peterson, who in terms of talent alone is up there with AJ Green as one of if not the best in the draft, but due to needs of the teams above Peterson Slips.

1.8 Tennessee Titans : WR – A.J. Green – Georgia

They need a QB more than anything else, but with Gabbert gone I can’t see how they go down the Cam Newton road considering the Vince Young debacle. Locker or Mallet might be an option but surely this is too early for both. But the Titans need WR’s also and Green goes being the best player available at this point.

1.9 Dallas Cowboys : CB – Prince Amukamura – Nebraska

This time round the Cowboys get a chance to pickup one of the top 2 Cornerbacks. Its an area that has needed some attention for a while for the Cowboys so its sensible that they address it at this point and pickup some Defensive Line talent later in the draft due to the greater depth at that position.

1.10 Washington Redskins : WR – Julio Jones – Alabama

At first I was thinking Locker, but the more I think about it with Jones having a great combine and the Redskins lack of any real playmakers at WR, they brought in Galloway last year and looking at Andre Davies this year, when this happens you know they need a WR badly. Then look for the QB in round 2.

1.11 Houston Texans : DE – Ryan Kerrigan – Purdue

Texans need help anywhere and everywhere on defence. Their passing defence was the main concern but with Amukamara and Peterson gone they could go for Brandon Harris but I have them going for Kerrigan this time, his main knock has been he doesn’t have the physical tools but an outstanding work ethic, to me and many others I think he showed he has plenty of physical tools this week in the combine.

1.12 Minnesota Vikings : QB – Cam Newton – Auburn

Vikes finally get a shot at a QB who could be special. Cam Newton is a boom or bust type pick but the Vikings are built in most positions to win now and Newton’s Athleticism could perhaps help him out early.

1.13 Detroit Lions : OT – Anthony Castonzo – Boston

Lions have kept on giving Jeff Backus more pay checks than warranted, if Stafford is ever to stay healthy he needs a decent LT and Castonzo could be that guy.

1.14 St.Louis Rams : WR – Jon Baldwin – Pittsburgh

Would have been an easy pick of Julio Jones made it this far but as that’s not the case the Rams would look at Cornerback possibly. But they need a WR desperately and so they go for Baldwin in the hope that he isn’t just a raw workout warrior if they convince themselves there is enough on tape of the guy.

1.15 Miami Dolphins : RB – Mark Ingram – Alabama

Another easy pick with Newton off of the board, if Newton is around they will look hard at him, but in this case they get a guy who can come in and replace Williams and Brown in one shot.

1.16 Jacksonville Jaguars : DE – Adrian Clayborn – Iowa

The Jags have been after a pass rush DE since as long as I can remember. Problem is mediocre season after mediocre season never gives them a chance, but there are a fair few prospects at DE in this draft class and if Cameron isn’t about Clayborn gets picked.

1.17 New England Patriots : DE – J.J. Watt – Wisconsin

At times the Patriots really struggled against the run last season and they really need to improve at DE. Watt may not be much of a pass rush but he is a solid fixture at DE in a 3-4 and a guy who plays hard which fits the Patriots mould.

1.18 San Diego Chargers : DE – Cameron Jordan – California

An OLB would have been a better shot or even a guy like Baldwin who would appear to fit the Chargers mould for WR’s would be a better option here but with those guys worth picking already gone the Charger address any area that could do with an improvement at DE. Jordan has been impressive every step of the off-season and has good tape to go on also.

1.19 New York Giants : OT – Tyron Smith – USC

Smith is a little raw and needs some work, but he has freakish athleticism and in a division with a lot of high level pass rushers who are more about moves than brute strength Smith would be an attractive option.

1.20 Tampa Bay Buccaneers : CB – Brandon Harris – Miami (fl)

Ronde Barber can’t keep playing forever and behind him Talib is the only real stand out. Harris can come in and learn from Barber who is likely in his final year.

1.21 Kansas City Chiefs : DT – Stephen Pea – Oregon St.

Chiefs made it to the playoffs with a combination of solid defence and a running game, so they look to continue helping improve the defence with an addition at NT. Pea is an instant upgrade.

1.22 Indianapolis Colts : OT – Nate Solder – Colorado

They needed to improve the Offensive line two seasons ago and it didn’t happen, and it was evident in their performances that it’s still an area that need attention.

1.23 Philadelphia Eagles : OT – Derek Sherrod – Mississippi St.

The Eagles line hasn’t been up to scratch and with Vick and QB they need a decent line to prevent him from picking up niggling injuries and allow him to continue his vast improvement as a Pocket QB.

1.24 New Orleans Saints : DT – Corey Liuget – Illinois

Corey Liuget is getting more and more attention and will no doubt start going up people’s draft boards. There is very little beyond Ellis for the Saints at DT and they need to improve the pass rush.

1.25 Seattle Seahawks : QB – Jake Locker

With none of the main Wide Receivers available the Seahawks look to an area that’s of real concern right now and that being QB. With Hasselbeck’s situation up in the air and with Charlie Whitehurst not looking like the guy people had expected it makes Sense that a guy like Locker is the pick here. With some work Locker could be a a fantastic pick

1.26 Baltimore Ravens : CB – Jimmy Smith – Colorado

Its no secret the Ravens Defence main weakness is corner back and they have failed to really address it for a few years now. Smith has fantastic size and athleticism and will probably shoot up the draft with a good combine.

1.27 Atlanta Falcons : DE – Aldon Smith – Missouri

The Falcons need help at DE opposite Abraham who is no spring chicken himself. Smith is one of those elite athletes who needs work, Maybe Abraham can take him under his wing and pass on some wisdom.

1.28 New England Patriots : G – Mike Pouncey – Florida

Patriots O-Line looked like it was starting to show some weakness last season. Adding a guy like Pouncey will instantly help cure that potential problem.

1.29 Chicago Bears : OT – Gabe Carimi – Wisconsin

Bears have an obvious need at OT, or anywhere along the line to be blunt. They would probably prefer one of the other guys buy Carimi is still a good prospect for this point in the draft.

1.30 New York Jets : OLB – Akeem Ayers – UCLA

Jets would rather a WR, CB or even a safety, but I am not sure the value is there so they play it smart and get a highly talented LB in Ayers who fits their 3-4 scheme.

1.31 Pittsburgh Steelers : CB – Aaron Williams – Texas

Steelers need a corner badly and it’s the area most teams target the Steelers if you look at their last few season. Williams has the size and speed to fit their system.

1.32 Green Bay Packers : RB – Mikel Leshoure – Illinois

The RB position is their main concern and even with the late season emergence of James Stark they need someone else to improve what was pretty much a dire running game for most of the season.

I personally don’t think you can ever have too many corners, but I doubt this is the route the Bucs will take. They like Lewis & Biggers, & will get Talib back. Barber will be a nickel in 2011.
Tampa will take a DE or a pass-rushing tweeneer OLB, methinks; maybe a RT.

Perhaps Aldon Smith but im guessing most of the good 4-3 ends will be gone well before the Buccs pick at 1.20. Also I know Barber has signed but usually its best to get a guy in playing behind a vet like Barber for a year or so, otherwise you see a guy thrown in the deep and and often they fail or at least not flourish as well as they could.

I don’t think Nick Fairley is a bad pick for the Bills, but for completely different reasibs than you. First, Spencer Johnson played little defensive tackle for the Bills last season, at least not until the lack of 3-4 personnel forced them to play a lot more 4-3 toward the end of the season. The Bills have professed that they intend to keep the 3-4 as their base defense. Running the 3-4, they do have Kyle Williams who was a probowl alternate, and whom the Bills intend to keep at NT. They also have Torrell Troup, who came in late in the season and looked good when he did play. He will get a lot more playing time in his second year. Nick Fairley is even more undersized for a 3-4 NT than is Kyle Williams, about as undersized as Spencer Johnson. So why would he be a good pick? Because he’s got all the athleticism he needs to make a transition to 3-4 DE. Yeah, when the Bills are playing 4-3 he can shift inside and play some DT, but his primary home in Buffalo would be at end.

Oh, and on Buffalo’s problems stopping the run? I’t probably not the fault of the DTs/NT. It has more to do with the ends and outside linebackers not being very good at setting the edge, and the inside backers not being very good at stepping up & filling their gap assignments. They’re hoping Shawne Merriman can come in and recover his early career form, and they need to draft another good young ILB to pair with Paul Posluzney.

Agreed they need help at ILB but as you no doubt also agree that 1.3 aint the pick to even think about that area heh. If Dareus hadn’t gone 1.2 with me i would have him going to the Bills no doubt, there has been plenty of talk that Fairley can play 3-4 end and as you also stated the Bills can move him inside in nickle packages which against the teams in your division especially the Pats you will have to play a fair bit of.

Forgot to ask, there are a lot of people talking about Cam Newton going to you guys at 1.3 what would you think of that?
